1,4-Dioxane is a six-membered heterocyclic compound containing two oxygen atoms. It is a colorless, flammable liquid with a slight ether-like odor. It is sensitive to light. Its vapor easily absorbs oxygen in the air to form explosive peroxides. Its explosion limit is 1.97%-22.5% (volume). It must be treated with a reducing agent during distillation. Its melting point is 11.8°C, its boiling point is 101°C (Chemicalbook 750 mmHg), and its relative density is 1.0337 (20/4°C). It is soluble in water and organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. It can form an azeotropic mixture with water (containing 18.6% water), and its boiling point is 87.8°C. It reacts with tetranitromethane to form a bright yellow color. A trace amount of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (BHT) is often added as a stabilizer in daily purchased products.
