Azelaic acid is a drug for the prevention and treatment of skin diseases, mainly used to treat acne, chloasma and skin melanin deposition. It is also an important organic synthesis intermediate, used in the synthesis of plasticizers in the plastics and rubber industries, in the synthesis of low-temperature and high-speed lubricants in aviation fuels, and in the manufacture of electrolytic capacitors. The main production method for preparing azelaic acid is to use unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid and corresponding triglycerides such as castor oil and cottonseed oil.
