A compound of bromine and hydrogen, a strong acid. Slightly fuming. Low toxicity, median lethal concentration (rat inhalation) 2.858G/L/h. Long-term exposure manifests as chronic respiratory irritation symptoms and digestive dysfunction. Easily soluble in organic solvents such as chlorobenzene and diethoxymethane. Miscible with water, alcohol, and acetic acid. Very corrosive, it can react with all metals except platinum, gold, and tantalum to form metal bromides. It is also very reducible, and gradually turns yellow-brown when exposed to air and sunlight due to the release of bromine.
